Sweden and the United Kingdom strengthen research cooperation
SWEDEN, October 20 - Published
Today, 20 October, Maria Nilsson, State Secretary to Minister for Upper Secondary School, Higher Education and Research Lotta Edholm, and Lord Vallance, UK Minister for Science, Innovation, Research and Nuclear signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on research and innovation. The signing took place at the Swedish Ambassador’s residence in London.
“The United Kingdom is one of Sweden’s most important bilateral partners. With this MoU we are further deepening our cooperation within research and innovation. The aim is for it to be of concrete benefit to collaborations between researchers in Sweden and the UK and to be able to contribute to joint activities that, among other things, will strengthen excellence, openness and research security,” says Ms Edholm.
Two years ago, the UK and Sweden entered a Strategic Partnership that builds upon the countries’ strong common interests and values. The aim was to deepen and broaden cooperation within many areas, including research and innovation.
The new MoU states that Sweden and the UK agree on international cooperation based on excellence being crucial if Europe is to continue being a key actor in the global research and innovation environment. One of the agreement’s aims is to build on opportunities for cooperation within Horizon Europe, EU’s framework programme for research and innovation, to strengthen ties between the countries’ research communities. Government Agencies Swedish Research Council and UK Research and Innovation will each play an important role.
A particular focus for 2025–2026 will be on further developing cooperation within artificial intelligence, research infrastructure, research security and responsible internationalisation, Arctic research, fusion energy research, and future telecommunications.
